the raven and the writing desk

"Why is a raven like a writing desk?" "Have you guessed the riddle yet?" the Hatter said, turning to Alice again. "No, I give it up," Alice replied. "What's the answer?" "I haven't the slightest idea," said the Hatter.
i like writing. i like having my thoughts spilled onto paper with black ink or charcoal pencil lead. i like making up people and magical lands where you can fly and the sea is a mass of lime jello.

writing has always been a big part of my life. i remember the first story i ever wrote {and the only story i've finished} was called The China Tea Set. four chapters long, four pages long, with an incomplete beginning and an incomplete ending. but i liked that book, because it was the first time that i expressed something i was passionate about. i expressed my thoughts.

sometimes it's not easy executing an idea onto paper. sometimes i have to walk away and do something else. clear my head. light my cupcake candle. daydream about peter/peeta/loki {had to}. but sometimes, it just all comes together. those inner sentences that may or may not make sense to the rest of the world, that's writing! that's me.

the question's been in my mind forever. have you any idea why a raven is like a writing desk? i don't know. it doesn't make sense. but writing doesn't always have to make sense. writing can be jumbled thoughts; abstract. you style it the way you want.

do you like writing? what sort of things do you like to write about?

{pea ess: the answer to why a raven is like a writing desk from lewis carroll himself: “Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!”}

  1. Oh yes! Writing is a need for me. I used to hate it, my mom had to wrestle me into writing papers, but then it all clicked...or something like that. I now can't go a full day without writing something. I write about feelings, desires, dreams, but mostly about what God is teaching me. =)

  2. As soon as I read the title, I didn't click on the post... I googled the answer. It seriously drove me insane.

    THis was great, though. I write because I express myself better on paper or though typing than with my mouth.

  3. Oh yes! I've always wondered why a raven is like a writing desk. So much so, that I've given myself a headache in the process. (:

  4. I love that writing is a way to express myself. I feel like a smarter person when I write my unorganized thoughts onto paper. They end up coming out as organized thoughts that actually make sense.

    I like to write poems and short stories. I like to make things up. I'm currently working on my first novel. (: Writing is such a wonderful thing!

  5. good to know Loki got added to the list. he's just amazing.
    also, I've heard a joke answer to why a raven is like a writing desk: "because Poe wrote on both." hahah. (the poet/writer Edgar Allen Poe wrote a famous [epic] poem called "The Raven"...if you haven't, go now.)
    (: (:

  9. ahaha love the riddle! I would have never guessed! Anyways what do I like writing about? Hmmm… I am a very dark writer (I get that a lot) although I may be the happiest person you’ve ever seen, I guess I write about things that I never wish would happen to me, maybe my nightmares, or thoughts that haunt me. I just thought of that right now as I was typing this comment. I’ve never really given thought to that. But I have noticed that my stories always start with the most beautiful setting, a sunset on a beach with woods in the distance. Then it gets all twisted and becomes a horror dark story. I find that it’s easier to write about horrible bad things than happy bright things because we experience them more nowdays compared to the sunshine that always finds its way through the darkness. We need more cupcakes and sunshine in this world, don’t-cha think?

  11. I love to write, though I feel like I don't do enough of it. I like to write mostly poems. I agree, writing can be abstract and doesn't always have to make sense. Great post! :)

  13. Great post, and I'm jealous that you've actually finished a story, I don't think I've ever managed it! There's always the next one though... :) Gina x
